The exterior columns used for gazebos are usually made from vertical grain Western Red Cedar but you can also get them in genuine Redwood, Mahogany, or a wood of your choice that is more to your personal liking. If you are looking for interior columns for your gazebo, they are typically made of a Poplar so that you can paint them or of a hardwood so that you can stain them.

You will want to make sure that all the standard column designs are architecturally correct when they are made and that proper convex shape is calculated to each net column length and the column staves are pre-tapered to maximize column wall thickness. Also make sure they use the best woods and glues that are acquirable to guarantee a beautiful and long-lasting product.

The exterior columns for your gazebo should be made with aluminum base plates that not only produce an airing slot but also act as a moisture barrier should your columns for your gazebo be installed on brick, cement, or stone.

If you’re building your gazebo yourself you can have your wood columns made to fit your custom designed gazebo. Most manufactures can trim your columns to fit within 1/16 of the exact height or you can order them longer and field-trim the bottoms of the columns yourself.

Some things you might like to know about installation if you’re doing it yourself, no matter where you get your columns from make sure that the exterior wood columns for your gazebo be vented at the top and bottom. It is just as important that no blocking is installed inside the column shaft. When the air temperatures change, having ventilation will allow the air on the inside of the wood column to change in temperature with the air on the outside, which allows the wood to expand and contract at an even rate. The circulation of air also helps to prevents possible moisture build-up inside your columns helping to keep them mold free. If you block the inside of the wood columns you prevent the circulation of air and moisture and this prevents the natural contraction and expansion of the wood columns.

By picking out your own wood columns you can add your own personal touch to you custom gazebo. Nothing is more complimentary than a natural wood gazebo to accentuate and beautify your lavish garden. Adding the wood columns is like the icing on the cake.
